Burma program overview
Mae Tao Clinic The Mae Tao Clinic was founded by Dr. Cynthia Maung in 1988 to serve the flood of displaced Burmese people surging across the border into Thailand. Since that time, the clinic has served tens of thousands of Burmese refugees living in the border region of Mae Sot, Thailand. Dr. Cynthia Maung has often been described as "Burma's Mother Teresa", and has received several international awards for her humanitarian work. Ethnic Minority Health Organizations Ethnic minority organizations within Burma manage their own clinics and backpack teams to care for populations displaced by internal conflict. Indigenous health workers equipped with medical supplies walk for as long as one month to reach their populations, and place themselves at significant risk. Several have been killed, either by landmines or government military. They are an exceptional and devoted group of health workers. GHAP Support Since 1998, GHAP has supported Mae Tao Clinic and ethnic minority health organizations by providing health worker training, technical support for medical and public health programs, health information systems support, and medical supplies. GHAP support builds local capacity, enhances local resources, and is based on a long-term relationship with organizations on the Thai, Chinese, and Indian borders of Burma. |
