Burma - Migrant Health The Mae Tao Clinic was founded by Dr. Cynthia Maung, herself a Burmese refugee, in 1988 to serve the flood of displaced Burmese people surging the border into Thailand. Since its early one-room days, the clinic has expanded to include a campus of activity whose services include: HIV counseling and testing, labor and delivery services, prosthetics, dental services, trauma and basic surgery care, an inpatient ward for children and comprehensive laboratory and pharmacy services. In 2006, the clinic saw more than 100,000 cases.

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Cynthia's clinic has trained more than 800 indigenous health workers from across the Thai, Chinese and Indian borders with Burma in 6 month to 2 year internships. These health workers are virtually the only source of health care in much of Burma's border zones. Planet Care/Global Health Access Program serves as a technical partner to Dr. Cynthia's work and provides flexible funding to support the clinic's unmet needs. |
